Notes

First edition, first impression, of this landmark Tauchnitz edition - a sweeping prospect of the past and present state of English letters written by Henry Morley, one of the earliest professors of English literature, but conceived and commissioned by Baron Tauchnitz himself, who described this 2000th Tauchnitz edition as the "memorial stone of my progress". This copy is inscribed by the 2nd Baron Tauchnitz, who after travelling much of Europe (including a sojourn in England) became partner to the firm with his father, on the first blank, "With best compliments, from, Baron Tauchnitz junior", and bears the bookplate of the Vivian family. The closest fit for a recipient would have been the British diplomat Hussey Crespigny Vivian, 3rd Baron Vivian, who was posted as ambassador to a number of North European courts. The frontispiece mentioned on the title page is in fact a 40 page booklet bound in at the front, which includes 173 facsimile signatures of contemporary contributors to the Tauchnitz editions, photographed from their correspondence with Baron Tauchnitz. Needless to say this constitutes an extremely useful compendium of autographs for practically all the most significant authors of the day who were writing in the English language. Already an elusive title, this landmark Tauchnitz edition is rare inscribed.
