The remarkable proof sheets with numerous annotations by the author

Corrected proof sheets, with manuscript and typewritten annotations on 23 pages, the majority in McAlmon's hand. McAlmon makes changes to both the formatting and language of the poems, proving an insight into his writing method. The Portrait of a Generation was published in 1926 by his own Contact Publishing Company in an issue of 200 copies. McAlmon, a "dedicated professional editor", had moved to France in 1921 and began publishing the works of friends and writers such as Mina Loy, Ezra Pound and Ernest Hemingway; his publishing house described as "a kind of showcase for the talents of the expatriates" (Epp, p. 266, Knoll, p. 16). Proof copies of any of the Contact editions are uncommon. This copy, though unmarked as such, was part of the Bullitt Family Library.
