First edition of the collected and expanded articles of Kazumaro "Buddy" Uno relating to the battle for the island of Corregidor between Japanese and American forces during the first months of 1942. Uno, an American-born Japanese journalist and member of the Press Bureau of the Imperial Japanese Army, was posted to Manila on 29 April 1942. When the Battle of Corregidor launched on 1 May he accompanied the Japanese Army Propaganda Corps to the front lines. The resulting work, which collects articles originally printed in the Shanghai Evening Post as the events unfolded, is a fascinating piece of Japanese anglophone propaganda. The preface, credited to an anonymous American journalist suggests that Uno "is to be congratulated for his impartiality" in creating "an invaluable record of the memorable battle". In the work Uno recounts supposed conversations held with U.S. soldiers, questioning them on their understanding of the causes of the war and the nature of conquest, and replying "in the manner of a school master explaining to children" (p. 46). With the contemporary ownership inscription of Philippine politician Irineo B Dizon to front free endpaper "Irineo B Dizon, Shanghai, China, Oct. 8, 1943" and to title page verso, "I B Dizon". Dizon was appointed Vice Mayor of Mangaldan, Pangasinan on 13 November 1945, while the town was still under US control. This edition is highly uncommon, with just ten copies traced institutionally worldwide, all found in either the US or Japan.
