Notes

First enlarged edition with the addition of the Libellus de locorum describendorum ratione, & de eorum distantiis inveniendis of Gemma Frisius, in which Frisius first described the principle of triangulation for use in surveying.
The Cosmographia of Petrus Apianus was one of the most popular books of the century. With material derived from the Luculentissima quaedam terrae totius descriptio of Johann Schöner (Nuremberg, 1515), Apianus gave vivid descriptions of the newly discovered lands in the New World. The other popular feature was the volvelles designed to help with practical mathematical problems relating to time-telling, the calendar, and astronomy and astrology. The first edition was published at Landshut, 1524, with three volvelles. Apianus' book was then corrected by the noted cartographer-mathematician-physician Gemma Frisius for the second edition of 1529, in which a fourth volvelle showing the phases of the moon was included. An abridged version called Cosmographiae introductio was published in Ingolstadt, 1531, containing a number of woodcut illustrations but no volvelles.
