De Jure Christi Domini ad regnum temporale Judaeorum
dissertatio R. M. Mariae Petronillae ab assumptione e congegatione sanctimonialium Immaculatae Conceptionis Asculi in Piceno. Editio altera nonnullis adcessionibus locupletata.Ascoli: Petri Pauli Bonelli, 1776 Stock Code: 141857
Rare second edition, with some additions. Maria Petronilla Caboni (b. 1749), a nun of the Congregation of the Immaculate Conception at Ascoli, first published this Latin dissertation on "The Right of the Lord Jesus over the Temporal Kingdom of the Jews" in 1774. The "contemporary notice of this suggests that the dissertation was written as an exercise rather than to earn her a doctorate. Like other early modern learned women, she disputed formally against men" (Jane Stevenson, Women Latin Poets: Language, Gender, and Authority, from Antiquity to the Eighteenth Century, OUP 2005, p. 321). According to the Prospetto biografico delle donne Italiane (Venice, 1824), Caboni studied mathematics, philosophy, French, Spanish, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew; this appears to be her only published work. We have been unable to trace any copies at institutional libraries.
Octavo. Contemporary paste board wrappers, stitched as issued.
Woodcut title vignette of Mary of the Immaculate Conception, woodcut tail-pieces.
A few old pale stains to back cover, general foxing, last 6 leaves with paper flaw at top corner. A very good copy.
