De l'esprit du gouvernement économique.Paris: Delalain, 1775 Stock Code: 104258
Presentation copyFirst edition. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the title page: "Le Prieur de Cheverny, Ex dono authoris". This is the principal work of the French economist Paul Boesnier de l'Orme (1724-1793), "one of the most systematic and comprehensive expositions of economics of its period" (Higgs). This copy has the imprint of Delalaine; the Mattioli and Sraffa copies have the imprint of Debure: "no priority established" (Sraffa Library). Scarce: "This book was suppressed because it attacked the Fermieres Généraux" (Sraffa Library); Library Hub locates just 2 copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (Senate House, Manchester), WorldCat adds a handful of copies worldwide. An attractive and most uncommon association copy: Cheverny, in the Loire Valley, lies about 10km from Blois, Boesnier de l'Orme's birthplace.
Octavo (210 x 128 mm). Mid-19th century French dark green quarter calf, marbled sides, gilt panelled spine, top edges speckled, others untrimmed, marbled endpapers.
Gilt arms of Gitton du Plessis in tail compartment of spine; discreet book label of P. de la Morandière to front pastedown. A touch of foxing in places. An excellent copy, tall and clean, with the half-title.
