First edition, first impression of this anthropological study of Sujarupa, a village in Rajasthan, between 1950 and 1981. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author "For Mary, invaluable reader of imperfect chapters, from Morris", together with a laid-in postcard from the author, informing the recipient of Carstairs's appointment as vice-chancellor of the University of York in 1974 (his tenure was beset by difficulties and ended in 1978).
