Der Doktor Faust.
Ein Tanzpoem, nebst furiosen Berichten über Teufel, heren und Dichtfunst.
Hamburg: Hoffman und Campe, 1851 Stock Code: 143688
First edition of Heine's "dance-poem" based on Goethe's classic tale. "It was during a very dark period in Heine's unhappy life that the notion of producing a Faust of his own once more took hold of his mind. Already more than half-blind and crippled by the stroke which his fearful state of mind about his uncle's will had precipitated in March 1845, he was approached by Benjamin Lumley of Her Majesty's Theatre with the request for a ballet-scenario" (E. M. Butler, the Fortunes of Faust, Cambridge 1979, p. 302). According to the Oxford Dictionary of Dance the Faust ballet was never realized "though some later Faust ballets made use of his libretto".
