Notes

First separate issue, the work also being issued in periodical form in Mémoires de physique et de chimie de la societe Arcueil 3 (1817). The work is notable for containing the first map to show the use of isotherms, a term Humboldt coined for lines of equal average temperatures. The chart extends only across the northern hemisphere, from America to China. Although pictorially simple, Humboldt's map revolutionized physical geography and indeed all future thematic mapping. Isotherms were a readily understood way of uniting global observations of temperature into a coherent whole and Humboldt's work therefore helped lay the foundations for modern meteorology.
