NotesFirst edition, first impression, presentation copy, doubly inscribed on the half-title by the author and illustrator to natural historian Robert Lami, surrounded by two highly finished hand-coloured ink sketches by Bory depicting young explorers climbing trees and making studies of fish on the ocean floor.
Heim, a mycologist and early proponent of biodiversity, was director of the French National Museum of Natural History from 1951 to 1965. His inscription to Lami reads: "à Robert Lami en souvenir du Cap Fréhel et autres lieux affectueusement R Heim". Bory's reads: "à M. R. Lami Hommages respectueux de la Dessinatrice M Bory".
Small octavo (160 x 107 mm). Bound preserving the original pictorial front wrapper in dark green quarter morocco, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands, green marbled boards, green endpapers.
