Notes

First edition, first impression, presentation copy, doubly inscribed on the half-title by the author and illustrator to natural historian Robert Lami, surrounded by two highly finished hand-coloured ink sketches by Bory depicting young explorers climbing trees and making studies of fish on the ocean floor.

Heim, a mycologist and early proponent of biodiversity, was director of the French National Museum of Natural History from 1951 to 1965. His inscription to Lami reads: "à Robert Lami en souvenir du Cap Fréhel et autres lieux affectueusement R Heim". Bory's reads: "à M. R. Lami Hommages respectueux de la Dessinatrice M Bory".
