Die Cultur der Renaissance in Italien.Basel, Schweighauser Verlag, 1860 Stock Code: 91256
NotesFirst edition. Written by Burckhardt (1818-1897) between 1855 and 1858, Die Kultur der Renaissance is a milestone in cultural history. While the author's definition and historical description of the Renaissance have been rightfully questioned, "no criticism can detract from the powerful spell which Burckhardt's book has exercised upon such widely different writers as Ruskin, Nietzsche and Gobineau, as well as upon innumerable lovers of the most magnificent period of European history" (PMM, p. 211). Loosely inserted is a newspaper clipping from the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, 11 September 1960, of an article on the book, written by the Swiss historian and Burckhardt biographer Werner Kaegi to commemorate the centenary of the publication date.
Octavo (221 x 136 mm). Contemporary brown half morocco, raised bands to spine, titles to spine gilt, brown pebble grained boards, green endpapers.
Spine sunned, extremities lightly rubbed and a touch bumped, minor wear to corners, paper of front board slightly chipped along side, inner hinges partly cracked but still firm. A very good copy.
