First English edition of this important account compiled by the senior advisor to the Russian Imperial Foreign Ministry. A timely publication guided not by "any idea of vain recrimination... On the contrary... the moment has come for the all the European Powers to strike a balance... and to acknowledge towards one another their mea culpa".
Originally written in the immediate aftermath of the conflict in 1863, it was first published anonymously - "par un ancièn diplomate" - in Paris in 1874 under title Étude diplomatique sur la guerre de Crimeée, and subsequently under the author's name in the major Russian magazine 'Vestnik Evropy' in 1886. Zhomini was the son of the great military analyst Antoine-Henri Jomini, and was involved in the Russian diplomatic service at the highest level for over fifty years. An uncommon work, just 6 locations on Library Hub, this set oddly has been bound from Allen sheets by the Freethought Publishing Co.

2 volumes octavo. Original grey cloth, titles in black to the spines, panels in black to the boards, pale cream surface-paper endpapers.
Condition
Overall a touch finger-soiled, spine tanned, free endpapers browned, text-blocks toned, but overall a very good set.
