First Westall edition. Richard Westall (1765-1836) was an important illustrator and a "significant and innovative figure in the development of the English watercolour," whose engravings for Don Quixote are lively and well executed. Westall served for nine years as drawing master to Princess Victoria and is best remembered for his portraits of Byron, which hang in the National Gallery (ODNB).
4 volumes, octavo (174 x 104 mm). Contemporary half vellum, gilt titles on black morocco labels to spines, gilt rules to paper sides, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt.
Engraved frontispiece and 5 plates in each volume.
Contemporary ownership inscription to title page of each volume. Spines toned, labels a little rubbed, boards gently bowed, sides lightly marked and browned, some stains and mild foxing throughout, but overall a very good set.
