Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the publisher Rex Collings on the front free endpaper, "For Rex who first published the bulk of this book, with gratitude & love, Tony", and additionally signed by the author on the title page, "Tony Harrison, xii. 85". The Misanthrope (1973), Phaedra Britannica (1975), Bow Down (1977), and The Oresteia (1981), all four of which are included in this volume, were first published by Rex Collings. The Bartered Bride (1978) was published by G. Shirmer, and the remaining three plays, Yan Tan Tethera, The Big H, and Medea: a sex-war opera, are published here for the first time. Loosely inserted is a photocopied copy of Harrison's "Prologue", a "glorious précis of the National's history" intended to be performed by Albert Finney during a Royal visit to the Olivier Theatre in 1975 (Rosenthal, The National Theatre Story).
