An original drawing used for the cover design of MacInnes's novel City of Spades. The book is the first in a trilogy known as the London novels based on the nature and cultural importance of youth and black subcultures.
Born in Nottinghamshire, Alexander Weatherson (1930-) finished his art education in London at the Royal Academy Schools and the Courtauld Institute. Victor Musgrave represented Weatherson at Gallery One from 1955, giving him his first solo exhibition in February 1958. His paintings, collage and mixed media works were often influenced by music. From 1968 until 1991 he was Principal lecturer in Fine Art at Leeds Polytechnic/Leeds Metropolitan University.
