First edition, first impression, one of 300 copies on paper, from a total edition of 310. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To J. Guttridge from T. J. Cobden-Sanderson" and dated 1902. The recipient was one of the Doves Press compositors who worked notably on the famous Bible, published between 1903 and 1905. This work on publishing embodies Cobden-Sanderson's own dedication to and ideals for the craft, urging the reader to understand the nature of the physical book as a whole rather than simply as a means to an end.Description
