Notes

First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author to the art critic John Russell on the half-title: "To my good old friend John Russel sic, his old old friend, Max Ernst", accompanied by a hand-drawn bird by Ernst. John Russell (1919-2008) was the chief art critic at the New York Times from 1982 to 1990 and author of books on Max Ernst, Henry Moore, Seurat, and Matisse. He was married to art critic Rosamond Bernier, founder of the French magazine of contemporary art L'ŒIL and an authority on the work of Ernst.
Écritures is the collected writings of Ernst and brings together a variety of printed texts - poetry, treatises, verbal comments of collage novels, interviews - many of which are accompanied by Ernst's illustrations.
