Notes

First edition, later printing ("4 bis 8 Tausend" on title page). Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Julian Huxley from the Author Nov 1927", in pencil in Huxley's hand (and another note, perhaps in his hand, on p. 330). A remarkable association copy, linking two key figures of evolutionary theory and developmental biology: Julian Huxley (1887-1975) and Richard Goldschmidt (1878-1958). The central point in the work of both men was the problem of a relative growth in animals; Huxley developed a formula of the allometric growth (law of constant differential growth) while Goldschmidt was the first to draw up the broad interpretation of the consequences of that phenomenon.
