Einführung in die Wissenschaft vom Leben oder Ascaris.
[2nd Part only (of 3)].Berlin: Julius Springer, 1927 Stock Code: 104615
NotesFirst edition, later printing ("4 bis 8 Tausend" on title page). Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Julian Huxley from the Author Nov 1927", in pencil in Huxley's hand (and another note, perhaps in his hand, on p. 330). A remarkable association copy, linking two key figures of evolutionary theory and developmental biology: Julian Huxley (1887-1975) and Richard Goldschmidt (1878-1958). The central point in the work of both men was the problem of a relative growth in animals; Huxley developed a formula of the allometric growth (law of constant differential growth) while Goldschmidt was the first to draw up the broad interpretation of the consequences of that phenomenon.
Small octavo. Original green cloth, gilt lettered spine, gilt device on front cover.
161 illustrations in the text.
Ownership stamp on front pastedown of "Chas. Melton Johns Hopkins University", (1900-1974), author of Production and Analysis of Blastular Arrest of Frog Embryos (Johns Hopkins, 1964). Spine rolled and toned, with partial loss of fabric, sides patchily faded.
