Notes

First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Thornton Read: As an introduction to germanium research. Bill Shockley. Dec '50". The recipient Thornton Read was an American physicist who with Charles Frank formulated what came to be known as the Frank-Read mechanism for generating dislocations in a crystal. Shockley had worked with Read on crystal formation during a sabbatical from his research on semiconductors; Read studied germanium in his work on crystallization, hence the inscription. Electrons and Holes in Semiconductors was the most influential work of the Nobel Laureate William Shockley, frequently reprinted and becoming a standard text book on the subject.
