The first German dictionary of trade

First edition of the first German-language dictionary of trade, over 5000 pages long. Written in the form of a lexicon, the work is modellled upon Savary's groundbreaking Dictionnaire Universel de Commerce (1723), and attempts nothing less than to lay the foundation of an entire mercantile system. It established Carl Ludovici (170778) as the chief pioneer in Germany of the "science of commerce" as a discipline independent of Cameralist studies. Ludovici edited the Grosses vollständiges Universal-Lexicon aller Wissenschaften und Künste (173250) before writing the present work. His Grundriss eines vollständigen Kaufmanns-Systems is bound in at the end of the fifth volume. His earlier works include philosophical treatises on Leibniz and Christian Wolff. A second edition appeared in 17678, and a third in 17878, with a new version, revised and enlarged by J. D. Schedel, 1797-1801, after Ludovici's death.
