Erotidia.Rugby: George E. Over, 1889 Stock Code: 134330
NotesFirst edition, presentation copy from the author to Joseph Gleeson White, inscribed on the front free endpaper on Valentine's Day: "J. Gleeson White from Charles Sayle 'S. Valentine' 1889", along with Gleeson White's bookplate on the front free endpaper. Erotidia, Sayle's second book of poetry, was limited to 220 copies. Gleeson White (18511898) was an art critic and editor, and a collector and patron of the Uranian poets. Gleeson White's lawyer, Sayle's fellow poet Charles Kains Jackson, gave the book a favourable review in The Artist and Journal of Home Culture. After White's ownership the book passed to another Uranian poet collector, Francis Hawtrey Morgan May (1880-1964), with his ownership signature to the front free endpaper. D'Arch Smith records some copies have a Burne-Jones designed device to the front cover, here absent; he does not give priority.
Duodecimo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in black.
Without the errata or limitation slip. Some pencilled marginalia to text. Spine darkened, pages toned. A very good copy.
