First edition, scarce, of a highly influential book: "Its influence was to be very great and Pattullo was to be quoted throughout the rest of the century as one of the famous agriculturists of his time, and the founder of a definite agricultural system the Essai is a handbook of English farming for the use of the French" (Andre J. Bourde, The Influence of England on the French Agronomes 1750-1789, Cambridge 1953, p. 78). It is also one of the earliest works to publicise the views of the French Enlightenment economist François Quesnay (1694-1774). who had published two articles on agriculture in the Encyclopedie: "Fermiers" (1756) and "Grains" (1757). Pattullo, a Scot, has been described as Quesnay's "first foreign disciple". Henry Pattullo, possibly a Jacobite exile who fled to France following the '45, is an obscure but important figure in 18th century writing on agriculture. His "Essay on the Improvement of Land was the first work to describe properly the new methods of crop rotation practised in England and Flanders" (Milward & Saul, The Economic Development of Continental Europe 1780-1870, p. 80). A lovely copy of an important work.
