First edition, first issue, presentation copy inscribed "From the Author" in the hand of the publisher on the half-title. This is the first of Arnold's two influential Essays in Criticism, published by Arnold as Oxford Professor of Poetry. The second was published in 1888. The subjects in this work include Heinrich Heine, Pagan and Mediaeval Religious Sentiment, Spinoza and Marcus Aurelius.

Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles gilt to spine, gilt rule border to front board, dark blue coated endpapers.
Condition
Cloth a little dust-soiled and lightly rubbed at the ends and corners, hinges cracking, internally clean, very good condition.
