Essays in Radical Empiricism.
New York: Longmans, Green, and Co, 1912 Stock Code: 145959
First edition, first printing, a collection of 12 essays edited and published posthumously by James's colleague and biographer Ralph Barton Perry.
James originally assembled an early version of the collection in 1906, choosing essays which were first published in journals. A year later he composed a separate list of essays for a proposed book called Essays in Radical Empiricism, which remained unrealized until 1912 when Perry amalgamated James's choices with some of his own additions to create this edition. The collection includes James's groundbreaking essays on "pure experience" and "radical empiricism". As the writings span the years 1884-1906, this edition captures the gradual development of James's philosophical theories as he engaged in lively debates with his contemporaries while a professor of psychology and philosophy at Harvard.
