Études sur les sciences sociales.
[Comprising:] Études sur les constitutions des peuples libres (Volume 1); Études sur l'économie politique (Volumes 2 & 3).Paris: Treuttel et Würtz, 1836-8 Stock Code: 113296
NotesFirst edition of one of the author's last works, an enlarged compilation of most of his writings on economy. "In order to explain, once for all, his entire social philosophy, Sismondi had the happy idea to assemble, and to publish under the title Etudes sur les sciences sociales, an old treatise on political constitutions which forty years earlier he had been unable to publish, as well as a complete series of selections from his large and small works and articles on economics. It seems that the work attracted very little attention. 'I leave this world,' he wrote shortly before his death - he died on June 25, 1842 - 'without having made the slightest impression, and nothing will be done'." (Henry William Spiegel, The Development of Economic Thought: Great Economists in Perspective, p. 266).
3 volumes, octavo (208 x 130 mm). Contemporary quarter sheepskin, twin green morocco labels, raised bands ruled in black, marbled boards, all edges speckled brown, marbled endpapers.
Spines rubbed and chipped, joints of two volumes starting but still holding firm. An excellent set with exceptionally bright contents.
