or the History of a Young Lady's Entrance into the World.London, Geo. Newnes Ltd, 1898 Stock Code: 139286
NotesFirst Rackham edition, his own copy, with his ownership inscription to the front free endpaper verso, "Arthur Rackham, from the publisher's on publication" and his signature in pencil to the half-title. Burney's celebrated epistolary novel was first published in 1778 and quickly achieved considerable popularity. This work is a relatively early example of Rackham's illustrations which at this time "tended to take on the appearance of woodcuts, with the main features being drawn in thick pen and brush. From 1905 to 1910, as printing techniques improved, his line became sharper" (ODNB). This copy is in the first issue with a single leaf of publisher's advertisements at the end.
Octavo. Original blue-green cloth, titles and publisher's device to spine in gilt, titles and decorative wreath design to front cover in red, blue coated endpapers, top edge gilt.
Illustrated title page printed in red and black, and 15 full-page line drawings by Rackham.
Spine just cocked, rubbing to extremities, red ink splash to rear board, light foxing to book block fore edge and endpapers; a very good copy indeed.
