or The History of a Young Lady's Entrance into the World.London, George Newnes Ltd., 1898 Stock Code: 141404
NotesFirst Rackham edition. Burney's celebrated epistolary novel was first published in 1778 and quickly achieved considerable popularity. This work is a relatively early example of Rackham's work, which at this time "tended to take on the appearance of woodcuts, with the main features being drawn in thick pen and brush. From 1905 to 1910, as printing techniques improved, his line became sharper" (ODNB).
Octavo. Original moderate blue cloth, titles to spine gilt, titles and decoration to front cover stamped in maroon, top edge gilt, black-coated endpapers.
Frontispiece and 15 full-page line illustrations by Rackham; title page printed in red and black within an architectural border.
Just a little shelfwear to binding, a few leaves a little carelessly opened (looking slightly ragged at fore edge). A very good copy, bright and square, with the publisher's single advertisement leaf at the end and the 32-page catalogue (dated 11.99)
Latimore & Haskell pp. 10-11; Riall p. 25.
