Notes

First edition, sole impression, of Eliot's second book, this Ezra Pound's own copy with his blind-stamped address "5, Holland Place Chambers, Kensington. W." to front free endpaper, and a few manuscript annotations to his Bibliography at the rear, in particular adding "1918" to Pavannes and Divisions (crossing out "in preparation"), and adding after this "Instigations" and "Quia Pauper Amavi, 1919".
Pound moved to Holland Place Chambers from 10 Church Walk on his marriage to Dorothy in 1914 and lived there until 1918. "T. S. Eliot said many years later that in the largest room Pound cooked, by artificial light, and in the lightest but smallest room, which was inconveniently triangular, he did his work and received his visitors. The Aldingtons lived on the same floor... Friends or acquaintances who lived not far away during the years Pound was at Holland Place Chambers, included the painter Edward Wadsworth who had a place in Kensington Church Street near Notting Hill Gate; and Edmund Dulac, artist and illustrator, who lived off Holland Park Road." (Noel Stock, The Life of Ezra Pound, p.155).
Eliot's study of Pound was printed in a run of 1,000 copies to promote John Quin's private printing of Pound's Lustra. His authorship was only made public in The Borzoi periodical in 1920. Eliot later wrote "Ezra was then known only to a few and I was so completely unknown that it seems more decent that the pamphlet should appear anonymously" (cited in Gallup).
