First edition. Dagley's tales articulate "the problems and misery of economic insecurity, particularly in a fairy tale about a needle - that indispensable tool of women's labour". These tales "provide a detailed account not just of the kinds of objects found in a workbox, but also the various attitudes towards needlework and female employment, both for leisure and income... from the lowly chores of patching shoes and darning socks to laborious dressmaking to the fancy work performed with skill for pleasure... In these fairy tales about needles, women's work is shaped by social attitudes, their agency effectively that of a needle or pin" (Rozario, pp. 146-48).Description
