Far Away and Long Ago. A History of my Early Life.London: J. Dent and Sons, Ltd., 1918 Stock Code: 143037
NotesFirst edition, first impression, of Hudson's memoir of his life in Argentina. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the novelist Violet Hunt on the half-title, "Violet Hunt from her friend W. H. Hudson" and with the recipient's later gift inscription to her partner Ford Madox Ford on the front free endpaper, "Violet Hueffer to F. M. Hueffer".
Violet Hunt was an author, suffragette, and influential literary hostess who engaged in the same literary coterie as Hudson and Ford. Her partnership with Ford lasted from 1911 until roughly the time of this inscription, her use of his surname here in 1918 an indication of her continued attachment despite Ford's burgeoning relationship with the Australian artist Stella Bowen, which began early in that year. Ford included Hudson in his 1937 collection of memories of the group Portraits from Life, writing that Hudson "made you see everything of which he wrote, and made you be present in every scene that he evolved, whether in Venezuela or on the Sussex Downs" (p. 48).
Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine in gilt, frame and central vignette blocked in black to front cover.
Gilt to spine faded, small nick to head of spine, slight rubbing to board edges, a very good copy indeed.
