Ficciones (1935-1944).Buenos Aires: Sur, 1944 Stock Code: 140440
Printer's File Copy, later in the library of the Jewish Society of Buenos AiresFirst edition, first impression, a highly unusual printer's file copy with the ink stamp "Modelo del Escritorio - Imprenta Lopez" to front wrapper, first blank, and title page, and some occasional pencil annotations to the text. Imprenta Lopez is named as the printer in the colophon at the rear.
This copy was also passed, presumably a little later, to the Buenos Aires Jewish Aid Society, with their "Sociedad Israelita de Socorros, Ayuda Mutua" stamp to first blank, frontispiece recto (blank), and title page. This provenance is most compelling, given Borges's Jewish interests, particularly in matters of the Kabbala. These would reach full fruition in his next collection, El Alpeh (1949), but are already apparent in stories such as "La Muerte y la Brújula" (Death and the Compass), which first appeared here.
Octavo. Original blue wrappers, titles in white.
Small chips to corners of spine-ends, and two small surface chips to front wrapper at bottom edge, otherwise general light rubbing and faint marking, inscription erased from head of first blank leaving a mark, leaves evenly toned, some pencil markings to text within, very good.
