Notes

First edition. The Photochrom process, a variant of chromolithography, was invented in the 1880s by Hans Jakob Schmidt (1856-1924). It rose in popularity in the 1890s and by the end of the First World War was ubiquitous in postcard format. Most of the photographs in Fifty Colour Photographs of London are of landmarks but there are also a few portraits, including a postman, a flower girl and an orderly boy.
