Following the Equator.
A Journey Around the World.Hartford, Connecticut : The American Publishing Company, 1897 Stock Code: 139985
First edition of Twain's travelogue from a tour through the British Empire. This copy with the preferred single Hartford imprint, and the signature "11" at p. 161. Having invested heavily in revolutionary but flawed typesetting machinery, by 1894 Twain was practically bankrupt. He thus set out on a tour of the British Empire in 1895-1896, ensuring an enthusiastic audience in every port of call for his lectures on British imperialism, racism, and the religious intolerance of missionaries, and providing material for this highly successful account.
Large octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, colour elephant vignette to front cover within gilt framing and decorations.
Portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard, and numerous illustrations, of which 57 full page, by 11 different illustrators.
Bookseller's faded ink stamp (San Francisco) to rear free endpaper, pencil gift inscription to front free endpaper "to M. B. Selby, April 6, 1898, From Lloyd". Spine ends gently softened, light rubbing to extremities, foxing to paper vignette to front cover, the binding otherwise bright and unfaded, inner hinges cracked, sometime repaired, book block remaining firm, internally clean and fresh; a very good copy.
