Footsteps of Our Lord and his Apostles,
in Syria, Greece, and Italy: a succession of visits to the scenes of the New Testament narrative.London: Arthur Hall, Virtue & Co., 1852 Stock Code: 141233
Second edition of this narrative of a pilgrimage to the sites of the New Testament, published swiftly after the first edition of 1851. The work's popularity led for a third edition to be published in the same year. Bartlett (1809-1854) was a British artist known for his detailed steel engravings and keen archaeological eye, both of which are well-showcased in this work.
Octavo (244 x 162 mm). Original red morocco, titles to spine in gilt, spine tooled in compartments in gilt with raised bands, titles within elaborate cherubim-laden balconet design to boards in gilt within double ruled gilt frames, board edges tooled in blind, turn-ins tooled in gilt, cream coated endpapers, edges gilt.
Text printed within single frames. Frontispiece, engraved title page, map, 20 engraved plates and 24 illustrations in the text.
Extremities a little rubbed and scuffed, a couple of marks to boards, end leaves foxed, contents notably clean with occasional toning and finger-marking to margins; a very good copy indeed.
