Fourth edition of this richly illustrated travel account, first published in 1849. Bartlett (1809-1854) was a British artist known for his detailed steel engravings and keen archaeological eye, both of which are well-showcased in this work.

Contemporary brown morocco, titles to spine in gilt, spine elaborately blocked in blind in compartments with raised bands and triple ruled frames in gilt, boards blocked in blind and gilt with elaborate greek key roll and floral detailed frames, edges gilt, board edges tooled in gilt, cream coated endpapers, brown silk bookmark.
Text printed within single frames. Frontispiece, engraved title page, folding map, 25 engraved plates and 18 illustrations in the text.
Bookplate of the discerning naval bibliophile Robert Hayhurst to front pastedown. Contemporary ownership inscription of Jane Sarah Hanmer to front free endpaper, that of H. J. Hanmer to vignette title page. Board edges and spine joints lightly rubbed, a couple of faint scuffs to boards, contents sporadically foxed; a very good copy in attractive condition.
