Presentation copy to his colleagueFirst edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by Fleming on the front free endpaper: "To Leonard & Dilys with affection. Ian". Recipients were Leonard Russell (1906-1974), features editor and Fleming's colleague on The Sunday Times, and his wife, the novelist and renowned Times film critic Dilys Powell (1901-1995). It was Russell who persuaded Fleming to take the first of two trips that provided the material for Thrilling Cities (1963) and much of the background for You Only Live Twice (1964). For her part Dilys was one of the few critics who wholeheartedly welcomed the development of the Bond film franchise, "The cinema was a duller place before 007".
