A leaf from the fourth printed BibleA single leaf from the 48-line Bible printed at Mainz by Johann Fust and Peter Schöffer in 1462, the fourth printed Bible but the first to include information about the place of printing, the printer, and the date of publication, preceded only by the 42-line Gutenberg Bible, the 36-line Pfister Bible (Bamberg) and the 49-line Mentelin Bible (Strassburg).
The text is from Zechariah, consists of the last two lines of chapter 9, the whole of chapters 10-13 and most of 14. Chapters 914, consisting of two "oracles" or "burdens", are often considered an early example of apocalyptic literature, most Christian commentators reading the series of predictions in them as Messianic prophecies.
Leaf size c.397 x 285 mm; textual area c.208 x 200 mm, excluding rubrication flourishes in margins.
Printed in double columns, 48 lines.
One large hand-written initial in blue, three 2-lines in red or blue, chapter numbers alternately red and blue, headlines in alternating red and blue capitals, capital strokes in red. Remnants of paper stub at inner margin, two minor early marginalia on recto, a few small nicks at edges and very light marking; overall, very good.
