Notes

First edition, first impression. The first biography in English of the extraordinary Gilles de Rais (1404-1440), the 15th century French Baron who is famous as a companion-in-arms to Joan of Arc, a splendiferous theatre producer, and infamous as a necromancer and child-murderer (for which crimes he was eventually hanged and burned). His story is believed to have been the original inspiration behind Charles Perrault's 1697 fairy tale "Bluebeard".
