Illustrated by Laurence Housman.London: Macmillan & Co, 1893 Stock Code: 144448
First Housman-illustrated edition, trade issue. This fantastical narrative poem, which was first published in 1862 with illustrations by Christina's brother Dante Gabriel, has eluded classification, having been interpreted variously as a feminist tract, a capitalist critique, an allegory for drug addiction, and a children's story.
The illustrator Laurence Housman (1865-1959) worked in an intricate art-nouveau style. The brother of the poet A. E. Housman, Laurence was a committed writer himself, and was the co-founder of the Men's League for Women's Suffrage.
Duodecimo. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, covers elaborately blocked in gilt, gilt edges.
Illustrated title page and 12 plates by Laurence Housman, and several vignettes in the text.
