Goliath and David.
London: Chiswick Press, [1916] Stock Code: 125368
First and sole edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the verso of the front wrapper, "Ian Hope Simpson, Robert Graves, 1925". John Barclay (Ian) Hope Simpson (1905-1989) was the son of Sir John Hope Simpson, British Liberal politician and author of the first global history of the modern refugee. In the year this work was inscribed, Robert Graves graduated from St John's College, Oxford. It is possible that, while there, his path crossed with Ian Hope Simpson who was studying at Worcester College at the time. Ian Hope Simpson went on to become a history master at Rugby School and deposited the family papers at Balliol College shortly before his death.
Two hundred copies of this early privately printed work, the author's second publication, were produced in late 1916 and distributed early in 1917. At the time of publication Graves was recuperating from bronchitis, and, perhaps as a consequence of his weakened state, inscribed very few copies at the time of publication.
