Gone with Golson.
Benny Golson Quintet featuring Curtis Fuller.New Jersey: Prestige, 1960 Stock Code: 144480
Signed by Golson in black marker pen at top left corner of front cover, "Benny Golson, Feb. 9, 2000". Original pressing of one of Golson's best albums from this period; the quirky pea-green cover photo showing Benny holding aloft an umbrella seems to imply that with one gust of wind he may well be "gone". Golson's is an uncommon autograph.
The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings remarks of the tenorist that "despite contributing several hard-bop staples, his own playing style originally owed rather more to such swing masters as Coleman Hawkins and Lucky Thompson; a big, crusty tone and a fierce momentum sustain his solos, and they can take surprising and exciting turns," going on to say of this highly-rated album that "Golson fashions a catchy arrangement of Bryant's "Staccato Swing", takes an impassioned course through "Autumn Leaves" and turns in a fine "Blues After Dark"". The band comprises Curtis Fuller (trombone, Ray Bryant (piano), Tom Bryant (bass), Al Harewood (drums).
12-inch vinyl LP (Prestige / New Jazz 8235), new plain paper sleeve (original sleeve also present), original album cover.
Just a little shelf wear; a few light abrasions to disc yet remains very good overall.
