Notes

First edition, second printing, of this controversial historical study, "the only comprehensive work in any language, to my knowledge, that unequivocally espouses the right of an older male to have social-sexual relations with a young boy" (Dr Albert Ellis's postscript). This copy has the ownership inscription of gay publisher Winston Leyland (b.1940), a leading figure in American LGBT publishing who won the Stonewall Book Award in 1980. He established the Gay Sunshine Press in 1975, and his Gay Sunshine Journal (1970-82) was particularly influential for its interviews with prominent gay writers of the era.
A typed hand-corrected letter from the author is laid in, signed J. Z. Eglinton, but giving his real name Walter Breen on the return address, accompanied by the injunction that Leyland not print his address or publish his real name for fear of "a federal judge in Albuquerque who would love to see documented in print his certainty that WB JZE; he has been trying to get it for eleven years - object, having me declared an unfit parent, deprived of custody of my kids. He is an archetypal redneck..." He goes on to note that "I would not be averse to being interviewed in Gay Sunshine provided that my nonphotogenic face is not photographed. Not only because of that federal judge, but for other largely political reasons; in particular, my boss (though he knows I am gay) would object to having 175,000 magazine readers learn that under my other name I am the author of that wicked book which was banned in Ireland, S. Africa, Australia, N.A. and W. Germany because it dares to talk about That Subject". Breen was also a numismatist and science fiction writer. In 1991 he was sentenced to a ten year jail sentence for child molestation, and died in prison in 1993.
