Notes

First edition, first printing. Pioneer vibraphonist Hampton started out as a drummer, playing with such as the Dixieland Blue-Blowers and the Les Hite Band. He was asked to contribute on the vibraphone for two songs when Louis Armstrong hired the Hite band on a visit to California in 1930, thereafter being in high demand as a featured instrumentalist. In 1936 he joined Benny Goodman's Trio, expanded thereafter to a quartet, one of the first racially integrated jazz groups, and also a highly influential small group in an era of Big Bands. In 1940 Hampton formed his own orchestra and employed such performers as Charles Mingus, Wes Montgomery, Kenny Dorham, Illinois Jacquet, Quincy Jones and Dinah Washington. He continued playing up to his death, aged 94, in 2002.
