NotesA handsome prize binding featuring two biographies from Hueffer's "Great Musicians" series. The biography of Handel was written by the author and composer Florence Ashton Marshall (18431922) and originally published in 1883. The biography of Cherubini, first published in 1890, was composed by Frederick James Crowest (1850-1927) who authored a number of other books on music and classical composers.
Octavo. Tree calf prize binding by Edward Howell, raised bands to spine, brown morocco label, decorations to compartments gilt, floral rolls and Merchant Taylors' School crest to front board gilt, marbled endpapers and edges.
Two monochrome portraits.
Prize bookplate dated 1906 to front pastedown. Extremities slightly rubbed, spine ends a touch worn, head of joints splitting, light foxing to prelims, occasional minor spotting to margins of text block. A very good copy.
