First deluxe editions of the first four Harry Potter books, inscribed on the half-title of Philosopher's Stone by the author, "To Alex, enjoy reading these with Mummy and Daddy! J K Rowling", and signed by Rowling on the half-titles of the other volumes. Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets are fifth impressions; Prisoner of Azkaban, sixth; Goblet of Fire, first.

In 2000, Rowling had given permission for the pupils at North Foreland Lodge to perform a dramatisation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for their Christmas play, but she retracted the agreement after realising that this would set a legal precedent for the works to be staged. Rowling arranged to visit the school by way of apology for a day of events and readings, and signed these copies during her visit.

The deluxe editions, created for the gift market, were issued out of sequence, with the third book, Prisoner of Azkaban, being the first published in this format, issued simultaneously with the first trade edition in July 1999. The first two titles in the series followed two months later. Thereafter, Bloomsbury issued deluxe editions simultaneously with the trade editions for the rest of the series.
