Have Faith in Massachusetts.
A Collection of Speeches and Messages.Boston & New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1919 Stock Code: 130136
First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To William Faulkner, with regards, Calvin Coolidge". Although the inscription is undated it occurred prior to 1934, at which point the present copy was advertised for sale at Goodspeed's book shop in Boston. Coolidge is known to have also presented Faulkner with a copy of his 1929 Autobiography, that copy now held in the William Faulkner Collection at Princeton.
Have Faith in Massachusetts collects the speeches and correspondence made by Coolidge during his time as a local Massachusetts politician, and takes its title from the speech given by Coolidge on 7 January 1914 accepting his position as President of the Massachusett's Senate. Coolidge was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 1918 and this work includes important documents from the highly publicised Boston police strike of 1919, during which Coolidge gained national recognition. Coolidge became the thirtieth President of the United States in 1923.
With the bookplate of Danish-American actor Jean Hersholt to front pastedown. Hersholt performed in a total of 140 films, including "Flesh," a 1932 film co-written by an uncredited William Faulkner. He is known to have been a book-collector and held a number of Faulkner's signed works in his library.
Octavo. Original blue straight-grain cloth, titles to spine and front cover in gilt. Housed in a custom blue morocco solander box.
Rubbing to spine ends, joints, and tips, top edge dust toned; a very good copy.
