Part of the transcript of the Senate Watergate hearings, specially bound for Stanley H. Katz (1923-1993), who is mentioned on Richard Nixon's extensive "enemies list" on page 1731; Katz's name is circled in red crayon on the relevant page, presumably in his own hand, and his inclusion in the list is noted on the front cover. Nixon's main "enemies list" was a list of 20 key opponents, but a further "master list" was made with enemies running into the hundreds. Both lists were made public in the Senate Watergate revelations of 1973. Katz, a leading figure in the advertising industry and President of Leber Katz Partners, was included in the secondary list as a member of the anti-war Corporate Executives Committee for Peace; a relatively minor enemy, he was clearly proud enough of his inclusion to commission this custom binding. The Senate hearing transcripts were issued in 26 continuously paginated volumes; Katz was apparently less interested in the volumes in which he was not mentioned.
In April 1973, Katz purchased the library of New Jersey Governor Charles Edison (1890-1969). Many of the volumes were in this style of binding; Katz added to the library and had new volumes bound to style, including this one, with the rear turn-in stamped "Gov. Charles Edison library", despite not being in the original library.
