"The recent augmentation of the Naval forces of the country has increased the interest felt in our ships and sailors, and the present appears a suitable time to bring before the public a detailed and comprehensive work on the history of the Navy, illustrated by coloured plates, depicting the materiel no less than the personnel of the British fleet" (preface). The excellent plates were specifically commissioned for the work.
3 volumes quarto (277 x 212 mm). Contemporary blue half calf by Carter Bros of Brighton with their ticket to front pastedowns, raised bands, titles in gilt on red morocco spine labels, spines tooled in gilt, double gilt fillets on boards, marbled boards, edges, and endpapers.
Chromolithographic frontispiece, decorative half-title with vignette, and 14 plates to each.
Slight wear to extremities, light rubbing, internally very fresh; a very good set indeed.
