Histoire de Marguerite d'Anjou, reine d'Angleterre.Amsterdam: François Desbordes, 1740 Stock Code: 137421
Handsomely boundFirst edition of Prévost's biography of Margaret of Anjou, published the same year as his biography of William the Conqueror, which "gives us some insight into the workings of Prévost's complex creative mind and tells us something of the taste of his reading public. Above all it exemplifies the crisis through which historiography was passing" (Francis, p. 41). English translations appeared in 1755 (London) and 1756 (Dublin).
4 parts in 2 vols., small octavo (161 x 96 mm). Late 19th- (possibly early 20th-) century sprinkled calf, twin red and green morocco spine labels, compartments decoratively tooled in gilt, raised bands, boards bordered with gilt scroll, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt.
A prettily bound set, a few instances of stripping to boards, the contents clean and evenly toned, clipping of a previous bookseller's description pasted to front free endpaper verso of vol. I.
