Histoire du siécle d'Alexandre,
Avec quelques Réflexions sur ceux qui l'ont précéde.Amsterdam: [no publisher,] 1762 Stock Code: 127386
First edition. Simon Nicolas Henri Linguet (1736-1794) was a French journalist and lawyer "whose delight in taking views opposing everyone else's earned him exiles, imprisonment, and finally the guillotine" (Encyclopaedia Britannica online). The present work, the author's first, is a highly hostile account of Alexander the Great, whom the author places as causing far more deaths than Nero, and yet has been given an undeserved favourable light by history.
Duodecimo (161 x 96 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, red morocco label, spine richly gilt, marbled endpapers, blue silk bookmark, red edges.
Library stamps to front endpapers and title page, previous owners' pencilled notes and signatures to endpapers. Tiny chip to base of spine, small wormholes to rear cover, chip to top corner of p. 201-5 with loss to pagination, small chip to p. 195 affecting pagination, a few light creases and faint blemishes, a few minor paper faults at peripheries, yet overall an attractive copy.
